In our last round of healthy heart grants, we awarded over £45,000 to seven outstanding community based Healthy Heart Projects

 

CASH, (Consensus Action on Salt & Health)

National Salt Awareness Week | £10,000

National Salt Awareness Week, which this year focuses on salt and children is in January. The week ultimately aims to reduce salt consumption in children and in turn, reduce an important risk factor for the development of, heart disease, heart failure and stroke later in life.

The funding will pay for all the literature used at supporting events during National Salt Awareness Week and will enable posters to be distributed nationally to 2,500 GP surgeries and a leaflet to be produced, containing practical tips on reducing the amounts of salt children eat.

 

Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs | Yorkshire

Hearts of the Countryside | £5,080

The Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers will run an innovative project entitled ‘Hearts of the Countryside’, which will promote heart health issues to the rural youth of Yorkshire.The project will commence in early 2008, with the healthy heart message being spread to Yorkshire Young Farmers Club’s 1,800 members. Through a series of workshops and competitions, members will be encouraged to participate in a range of sports and activities, and learn about the healthy heart diet.  The YFC’s of Yorkshire will also be promoting the healthy heart message to young people at open farm events across the region, in conjunction with the Year of Food and Farming project.

 

St Luke's CARES | Yorkshire

Heart Beat Ambassadors | £10,000

Heart Beat Ambassadors aims to reach young people in the Beeston Hill, Holbeck, Hunslet and City wards of Leeds with the healthy heart message to help tackle unhealthy lifestyle and obesity in these areas.Over the next year, Heart Beat Ambassadors will take two different approaches to get the healthy heart message over to the community. Firstly, activity sessions will run three times weekly with competitions throughout the year, which will include dance, pom pom, baton and cheerleading, led by Young Leaders and supported by adult Youth Support Workers.The second approach revolves around campaigns and education delivered to the activity sessions by St Luke’s Youth Forum. Time will be set-aside at the activity sessions for heart education, tackling issues such as long-term diet, cholesterol campaign and smoking.

 

Bristol academy Flyers Basketball Club | Bristol

Hoops 4 Healthy Hearts | £8,000

Hoops 4 Healthy Hearts aims to reach up to 1,500 school children in and around South Gloucestershire and North Bristol with the healthy heart message to help tackle unhealthy lifestyle and obesity in targeted deprived areas.Hoops 4 Healthy Hearts will take place in a number of city primary schools during and after school that will include both classroom-based activities and court-based basketball coaching. There will also be school presentations, with awards to recognise achievements and club tournaments. The project introduces the basics of exercise, diet, and nutrition through fun and easy to understand sessions.

 

ARC Cymru | Anglesey

The Happy Heart Group |

The Happy Heart Group is designed to raise awareness of the importance of healthy eating and exercise amongst people with learning disabilities and their carers. Anglesey has the largest percentage per head of population of people with learning disabilities than any other Welsh country, so this project will have a great impact in the area. The Happy Heart Group will build on the success of a pilot that was undertaken last year on the Island. It consists of a seven-week programme that will educate people with learning disabilities about heart health issues such as the role of healthy food and exercise in preventing high blood pressure and heart disease. The sessions use easy-to-read resources and multimedia presentations, with handouts and work sheets complementing practical lessons throughout.

 

Leicestershire Clubs for Young People | Leicestershire

Be Healthy - Get Active | £7,180
Be Healthy-Get Active will reach a minimum of 300 young people in the with the healthy heart message, helping to tackle unhealthy lifestyle and obesity in the area.In 10 of the Leicestershire Clubs for Young People there will be displays and information available on healthy hearts as well as great activities including BMI testing and smoothie workshops. Young people will be encouraged to exercise and take part in club activities such as dance and fitness testing. There will also be support to help smokers quit, as well as innovate ideas such as carbon monoxide testing. In order to reach even more people in the area, the grant also funds three Family-Fun days, with displays and activities to encourage sustainability with parents and promote healthier lifestyles to families in Leicestershire.

 

Swansea Community Farm | Swansea

Roots, Shoots and Hearts | £5,000

Roots, Shoots and Hearts is an organic gardening group reaching people in the area with the healthy heart message, helping to tackle unhealthy lifestyle and obesity.The Roots, Shoots and Hearts gardening group will target adults over 35 and will start by explaining what coronary heart disease is and how to maintain a healthy heart. The sessions will run for three hours a week from April 2008 to March 2009, with the intention of continuing after this period as a volunteer led activity.
