‘Health Deafinitions DVD’ – Coronary Heart Disease

The grant will be used to develop a DVD to educate deaf people about their heart and how to look after it. British Sign Language and quality 3D graphics and animations will give deaf people a better understanding of heart health issues and medical information about heart disease. Bradford, Derby City and Wakefield Primary Care Trust’s will be working partners on the project and will help to ensure that the DVD is accessible for all those that will benefit from its use.
Sikh Community and Youth Service, Nottingham
‘Heart Alert project’

This project will promote healthy heart lifestyles to members of the Sikh community, through a healthy eating and cooking club and a range of physical activity sessions. Health check days will help to identify risk factors and enable individuals to take action against them. The main audience will be women over the age of 45 years and the local Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) will be used as a base to spread the healthy heart message further within the community to an even larger audience.

‘Ponthafren Happy Hearts project’

This project will provide education for individuals with mental health problems and their families and carers. It will cover all health matters relating to heart disease through a number of workshops; smoking cessation, weight loss, heart attack awareness, stress and exercise awareness and ‘hearty’ cookery sessions.

‘Healthy Deaf Heart project’

The aim of the project is to promote the healthy heart message to deaf people, carers and their families, using British Sign Language communicators and professional coaches. It will provide healthy heart sessions, first-aid training, fitness walking programmes, stop smoking advice, multisports workshops and healthy eating sessions.
Techniquest, Cardiff
‘Healthy Heart exhibit trail’

Techniquest is a popular, interactive science discovery centre in Cardiff. The funding will be used to develop and build a Healthy Heart exhibit trail within the main exhibition area. The colourful and fun exhibit will allow visitors to follow an interactive heart health trail and explore their lifestyle choices, whilst raising awareness of how they can lead healthier lifestyles and reduce their risk heart disease. Over 58,000 visitors go to the centre each year and will be able to access the HRUK Healthy Heart trail.
Swansea People First, Swansea
‘Having Fun with a Healthy Heart’
£4,874
This innovative project will produce specially developed ‘snakes and ladders’ style board games to deliver the healthy heart message to adults with learning difficulties and their carers in the Swansea area. Healthy eating and exercise will be the key messages and instructions will be available on a supporting DVD, so that groups can run their own peer-led sessions.
