Our founder, Mr David Watson, was a working heart surgeon who realised back in 1967 that he would be able to help more people with heart problems if more research into heart disease was carried out.
True to our founder's principles, today Heart Research UK continues to focus on surgical and clinical research but does also fund basic science.
Grants are available to support innovative clinical research projects targeting cardiovascular disease. The term “clinical research” refers to research carried out in a clinical setting involving human subjects with, or at an increased risk of developing, cardiovascular disease, designed to improve the understanding of pathophysiology, diagnosis or treatment of that condition. Studies limited to work on human tissue samples must have direct relevance to the disease or condition involving subjects from which samples are obtained.
