Heart Research UK has taken a bold step in the fight against heart disease by earmarking a record amount of money to fund medical research projects focusing on the development of new and innovative technologies to treat, cure or prevent heart disease.
The Novel and Emerging Technologies (NET) Grant will fund one application up to a maximum of £200,000.
What kind of projects are eligible?
Research on novel and emerging technologies and applications of bioengineering and molecular strategies for cardiovascular diseases.
Appropriate approaches would include tissue and bioengineering, the development and evaluation of new therapeutic devices, bioimaging, nanotechnology, biomaterials, genomic and proteomic approaches, computational biology, and bioinformatics.
Although the funding available might not be conducive to the support of clinical programmes, emerging strategies/technologies in this area might include the management of risk factors; the evaluation of invasive cardiology procedures such as angioplasty and stent placement; an evaluation of new surgical approaches to cardiovascular disease; strategies aimed at improving the efficacy of ventricular assist and other devices and the outcomes of resuscitation after cardiac arrest.
