novel and emerging technologies grant find out more

Heart Research UK has taken a bold step in the fight against heart disease by earmarking a record amount of money to fund medical research projects focusing on the development of new and innovative technologies to treat, cure or prevent heart disease.

The Novel and Emerging Technologies (NET) Grant will fund one project up to a maximum of £200,000.

What kind of projects are eligible?

Research on novel and emerging technologies and applications of bioengineering and molecular strategies for cardiovascular diseases.

Appropriate approaches would include tissue and bioengineering, the development and evaluation of new therapeutic devices, bioimaging, nanotechnology, biomaterials, genomic and proteomic approaches, computational biology, and bioinformatics.

Although the funding available might not be conducive to the support of clinical programmes, emerging strategies/technologies in this area might include the management of risk factors; the evaluation of invasive cardiology procedures such as angioplasty and stent placement; an evaluation of new surgical approaches to cardiovascular disease; strategies aimed at improving the efficacy of ventricular assist and other devices and the outcomes of resuscitation after cardiac arrest.

Novel and Emerging Technologies Grants are not appropriate for funding clinical trials as the aim of the NET scheme is to fund research at a much earlier stage.

How to apply

All applicants for a NET grant should complete a one-page outline application form, summarising the research proposal and giving an estimation of costs. The purpose of the outline application form is to establish that your proposed work clearly falls within the remit of the NET grant scheme and scientific assessment of your work will not occur at this stage.

Completed outline forms will be accepted from 1 April until 1 May 2010 and must be sent by email to the Grants Administrator at grants@heartresearch.org.uk

Applicants will be notified whether the outline proposal fits within the remit of the grant scheme by mid-May and applicants of those outlines that are acceptable will be invited to submit a full application.

A blank outline application form is available to download at the end of these guidelines. Please ensure that you have read the Terms and Conditions, and Policy Information documents below, before submitting your outline application form.

Maximum award is £200,000

outline applications accepted from 1 April until 1 May 2010

Deadline full applications:       1pm, 1 July 2010

Please note terms and conditions have been revised for 2010.
