Heart Research UK is delighted to have been chosen by the Mayor of Elmbridge in Surrey as his nominated charity for 2005/2006.

During his year in office, the Mayor, Cllr Graham Winton, raised a fantastic £33,000 for Heart Research UK. Former ski champion, Cllr Winton, is passionate about helping his constituents prevent heart disease by encouraging them to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Heart Research UK launched a programme of educational activities in schools, companies and groups across the borough to encourage healthy eating habits and active lifestyles. The Mayor said, “I am a great believer that prevention is better than cure and that good or bad habits are learned at a young age. Heart Research UK will leave a lasting legacy to the people of Elmbridge, resulting in healthier, happier and fitter citizens.”

Putting the fun into fundraising

A range of fundraising activities throughout the year, included a collection at Sandown Races, complete with pantomime horse race (we were pipped at the post by a two legged horse and should have demanded a steward's enquiry!), a Family Sponsored Walk around historic Painshill Park, tombola stalls at company employee days, a carol concert, fashion show and charity ball.

Community involvement

Heart Research UK is still working with local people in Elmbridge to train up volunteers to give educational talks in schools and to local social clubs and groups. Healthy Heart days are available to local companies to teach employees about cholesterol, the dangers of high blood pressure and hidden salts and fats in foods, as well as the need to incorporate exercise into their daily routine. Hopefully, employers will support their staff on the road to fitness by introducing healthy options on their canteen menus, encouraging lunchtime walks and organising social activities that involve taking moderate exercise.

Heart Research UK will use the money raised by the people of Elmbridge to support further community projects around the UK, encouraging others to look after their hearts.
