Latest News: Loss and the Heart
Mourning the loss of a loved one is a tough time both emotionally and physically and the heart comes under extra pressure. A recent study of 1,985 heart attack patients found that the chance of a heart attack is 21 times higher during the first day of bereavement, six times higher during the first week and the risk continues to stay elevated for at least a month. The results published in the journal Circulation clearly show how keeping your heart strong and healthy can help to withstand the strain that comes with losing a loved one or other severe emotional upheaval.
The loss of someone dear is one of the most stressful times in your life. Here are some coping techniques to help you and your loved ones through this difficult time.
- Try not to spend time alone. Surround yourself with family and neighbours who can help you keep to a daily routine.
- If you’re feeling unwell, go to your doctor to get a health check and if you’re on prescribed medication don’t forget to take it.
- People really do want to help so accept offers of practical help if you need to, Remember professional help may be available. Ask your GP to refer you to a bereavement counselling service or seek out a specialist support group.
- Take a long walk in the fresh air with someone you find easy to talk to about how you’re feeling. Walking will help to lower blood pressure, reduce your stress levels and help you sleep better.
Losing someone significant is sadly a part of life; try to strengthen your heart now so it is strong enough for you and others during bereavement.
